Chevening Scholarship – All You Need To Know

Eligibility:

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship applicant must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.
  • Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry into a postgraduate program at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
  • Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience, which includes Full-time employment, Part-time employment, Voluntary work and Paid or unpaid internships
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 13 July 2023.

Program type:

Applicants are required to select three-course choices when applying for a Chevening Award. This means that you will have alternative options if, for any reason, you are not offered a place on your first-course option.

However, applicants will not be able to change their course choices after submitting their application unless they are granted permission to do so at the interview stage.

Applying for a Chevening Scholarship is a competitive and challenging process. To give yourself the best chance of success, it is advisable that you do as much research as possible. We’ve collated the most important information for you here.

Applications for all Chevening Scholarships are submitted through Chevening’s online application system (OAS).

The online application system will be used throughout the application and selection process, and applicants may be asked to log back in at various points during the process to receive updates on their application status, or to submit documents.

There are a few tips to help applicants with their application. Applicants must make sure to remember their username and password, provide accurate information, save their entries as they go and avoid plagiarism.

Selection Criteria:

The process of selecting Chevening Scholars takes a minimum of eight months from the application deadline to when applicants are conditionally selected for an award. Applications are screened against eligibility criteria.

The applications for 2023/2024 Chevening Scholarships are now closed. Applications for 2024/25 scholarships will open in August 2023.

Interview Process:

Shortlisted applicants will receive an email with instructions on how to book their interview. Interview slots are available on a first-come-first-served basis, so it is best to book your slot as soon as possible.

Preceding the interview, applicants will be asked to upload education documents (copies of their original certificates and/or transcripts in their original language), two reference letters and a short biography that tells us more about them.

Also, applicants will be requested to provide a passport or national ID for their interview. The interview, which is a competency-based assessment will be conducted by representatives from the British embassy or high commission, who will use the global Chevening criteria to assess your answers.
