How To Apply For A Canadian Visa Without An Agent

Understanding Canadian visas is crucial, especially since many people confuse them with residence permits. Before we explore how to apply for a Canadian visa, let’s clarify what a Canadian visa really is and what it isn’t. In simple terms, a Canadian visa is just a document that allows you to enter Canada.

If you want to travel to or live in Canada, you need to get a Canadian visa. Applying for one is a necessary step in the process. This is particularly important for countries that don’t have Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) agreements with Canada or those without visa waivers.

Before you start the application process, there are a couple of things to consider. First, you need to determine your eligibility status. Second, you should know the type of visa you’re applying for.

Now, let’s break down these concepts and guide you through the essentials of Canadian visas.

STEPS INVOLVED IN APPLYING FOR A CANADIAN VISA

Here are the simple steps to apply for a Canadian visa:

1. Check if you qualify:

Make sure you meet the requirements for a Canadian visa.

2. Set up an online account:

Create an account on the internet for your visa application.

3. Gather your documents:

Collect all the necessary papers needed for your application.

4. Pay the fees:

Make the required payment for your visa application.

5. Wait for processing:

Allow time for officials to review your application.

6. Submit your passport and fee:

Finally, send your passport along with the processing fee.

CHECKING ELIGIBILITY STATUS

Determining if you qualify for a Canadian visa is easy. Just fill out an online questionnaire, which asks different questions based on the type of visa you’re interested in.

After completing the quiz, you’ll get one of three answers:

  1. You are not eligible for the chosen visa.
  2.  You qualify for the visa you selected.
  3. You are eligible for a different visa, and the system will guide you to it.

1. Create an Online Account

To apply for a Canadian visa, you’ll find instructions in your email on whether to apply online or in person. Since most Canadian records are now digital, creating an online account is usually the best choice.

There are two ways to make an online account. You can either make a Government of Canada login (GCkey) or use your online banking login. It’s recommended to use GCkey because Canada has partnerships with many banks.

2. Compile Your Documents

After creating an account and logging in, you’ll need to gather your documents for the application. Use your reference code (provided in your email) to start your application. The reference code contains the documents needed based on the type of visa you qualify for.

Fill out the necessary forms online and submit your application.

3. Pay the Fees

Once you’ve submitted your documents, you’ll be directed to a payment page. Use your bank information for the payment, ensuring it matches the data on your forms. There will be a fee based on the type of visa you’re applying for. After completing the payment, your application will be submitted.

You can expect to see your application on your account within five working days.

If the system finds you eligible for the visa you applied for or a different one it matches you with, it will ask for your email. You’ll receive an email containing important details, such as a reference code and necessary documents.

The reference code is crucial and shouldn’t be ignored. Save the email and copy the code somewhere safe. If you lose the reference code, you’ll need to redo the questionnaire.

4. Wait for Processing

After you’ve paid and submitted your application, it takes about two weeks for it to be processed. It’s important to regularly check your account for any messages about your visa application.

Sometimes, you might be asked for more documents or biometrics. If that happens, you’ll need to provide them at the embassy. You can either schedule an appointment or let the embassy do it for you.

During this process, you’ll need to give your biometric information and a passport photo. An embassy representative might also ask you some important questions. Answer these carefully because they play a big role in deciding if you get the visa. You’ll be notified about the outcome either right away or later.

5. Submit Your Passport and Pay the Fee

Once your visa application is approved, you’ll get a notification. Now, it’s time to submit your passport and pay the processing fee. Different visas may have different fees, and you’ll also need to pay for a return envelope for your passport.

You can do this in person or by mail to the Canadian embassy in your country. If you send it by mail, they’ll stamp it and send it back to you.

If you get an immediate answer after your interview, pay the processing cost right away and get your passport stamped for the visa.

After completing these steps (and any additional requirements), you’re allowed to travel to Canada. But keep in mind, that the final decision is up to the administrators at the Canadian airport. If they find any issues with your documentation, they can refuse entry and send you back home.
